Edges and Surfaces Matter
The reason so many nanosolids look different than their larger cousins is
primarily due to their edges. A tiny piece of graphite would have many of
its atoms at its edges, which are unstable. Most nanosolids are metastable:
if given an opportunity they would combine to become larger.
